Common questions

Clear answers

Use these answers to understand what the finder sees, what the owner receives and what to do when a return is not straightforward.

Does a finder need a RelayID account or app?

No. A finder uses their phone camera or enters the printed RelayID in a browser. The recovery page works without an account or app download.

Which owner details appear on the finder page?

Only information approved for that item appears. This may include a first name, general area, phone number, public email and backup contact. Child Safety pages show only guardian-approved contact and safety information.

Why did a scanned code say RelayID unavailable?

The code may be mistyped, inactive, deleted or not activated yet. Check the printed letters and numbers carefully. RelayID uses the same unavailable response in every case to protect privacy.

How does the owner know a RelayID was scanned?

The scan is saved in Alerts. When browser notifications are enabled on a supported device, RelayID can also send a push notification. Child Safety scans use their separate alert flow.

When does the owner receive a Call, Text or Email alert?

The finder chooses a method and confirms it before RelayID opens the matching phone app. The owner receives one notification for the confirmed method.

What should a finder do when the owner does not answer?

For an item, keep it secure and use an appropriate trusted location such as reception, security or lost property. For a child, stay in a safe public place and use trusted staff or emergency services where necessary.

What happens when an owner deletes a RelayID?

The RelayID is removed from the account, the finder page stops showing the former owner details and the physical code becomes available for another owner to activate.

What should happen if an item is marked stolen or someone is at risk?

A finder should avoid an unsafe handover and use trusted staff or police when needed. For a child or immediate danger, contact the appropriate emergency services. RelayID does not replace emergency services.
